The Choy Lee Fat we teach at Instituto Lou Fu flows directly from Grand Master Poon Shing, a 4th generation inheritor of this legendary art. Our lineage is not a matter of philosophy alone; it is a documented, authorised, and unbroken chain of transmission.
The art known as Choy Lee Fat was founded over a century ago by Chan Hueng. He named the style after his first two teachers, Master Choy Fok and Master Lee Yau-Shan, and the Buddhist faith ("Fat") of his third teacher, the Green Grass Monk. It's renowned for combining powerful northern kicking techniques with sophisticated southern handwork, in surges of explosive energy and fluid movements.
Grand Master Poon Shing was born in Guangzhou, China, on January 12, 1925. He was the second son of the legendary Grand Master Poon Dik, a 3rd generation master still considered one of the most outstanding figures in the Choy Lee Fut lineage. In 1934, due to the Chinese Civil War, the family immigrated to Hong Kong.
From 1934 to 1956, under his father's direct tutelage, Grand Master Poon Shing mastered the complete system: lion dance, bare hand forms, fighting techniques, and a full arsenal of weapons including the saber, staff, spear, Kwan Dao, butterfly knives, and trident. In 1956, after his father's passing, he assumed responsibility for the Poon Dik Athletic Association, spreading the legacy across South China and Asia.
In 1983, Grand Master Poon Shing was invited by the Chinese government to join a cultural diplomacy delegation. The delegation toured South America, and as a direct result, authentic Choy Lee Fut emerged and flourished in Bolivia, Peru, and Brazil.
Grand Master Poon Shing passed away peacefully on May 14, 2015, at the age of 90. His legacy is now carried forward by his direct disciples, including Grand Master Poon Wai Sanchez (5th generation), and through us, Sifu Claudio Vicente (6th generation) and his students (the 7th generation).
